Abstract | A three year project named the ‘Small Ruminants value chain transformation in Ethiopia’ or ‘SmaRT Pack’ was launched in 2019 to pilot integrated interventions containing animal health, genetics, feed and forage, marketing, environmental management and gender. The planned activities were built on previous intervention packages with a focus on integration of activities. The project was implemented in four CGIAR Research Program on Livestock sites; Bonga, Menz, Abergelle and Doyogena. The herd health management component of the project was led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and implemented by national partner agricultural research institutes, namely, Amhara Region Agricultural Research Institute (ARARI) and Southern Agricultural Research Institute (SARI). Different herd health activities were conducted in the sites comprising a herd health approach to reducing the incidence of respiratory disease, community-based gastro-intestinal parasite and coenurosis control, enhancing small ruminant reproductive performance, health certification of breeding rams and targeted feeding of pregnant ewes. |
