Abstract The survey on local conventions governing natural resources management was conducted in three communities in Koutiala site (Sirakelé, Zanzoni and Namposséla) and three communities in Bougouni/Yanfolila site (Diéba, Sibirila and Yorobougoula) in November and December, 2013. The survey included group discussion including local administrative authorities and technical services in Koutiala “cercle” and in Bougouni/Yanfolila “cercles”. The group discussion involved 10 to 15 participants. In addition, group discussion was conducted in each community involving 10 to 15 customary and opinion leaders. The group discussion looked at the strength and weakness of local conventions, the elaboration and implementation processes and strategies to strengthen them. To capture the involvement of community members in the elaboration and implementation of existing local conventions, between 25 and 30 individuals were randomly selected and interviewed on their level of participation in the elaboration and implementation of local conventions, and their perception on their benefits and challenges. Data analysis of this study is on-going.
