Project title Regional Pastrol Livelihood Resilience Project (RPLRP), Kenya
Project abstract The RPLRP is a world bank funded project implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Fisheries and Cooperatives state department of livestock in Kenya that seeks to enhance livelihood resilience to weather shocks and long term climate change for pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in drought prone areas in the horn of Africa. ILRI was contracted by the Ministry to contribute towards improving livestock productivity in Three of the project counties; Turkana, Isiolo and Marsabit through herd management and community-based breeding.The specific objectives for ILRI were: i) to build capacity of the communities to maintain the genetic diversity of indigenous livestock while improving their productivity and ii) to promote behavior change and reorient producers’ mindset to be more commercial.
